Before glass bottles became the common use to tote liquids, stoneware jugs were used. During the late 19th century, American potters produced salt-glazed stoneware vessels that commonly held whiskey and moonshine. This jug likely sat on old general store counters, cellar pantries or on a farmhouse kitchen shelf.
